Considerations When Choosing Legal Representation

It seems like an overplayed joke, to discuss the saturation of lawyers in our society, but in some cases, there really are a number of us around. From advertisements on TV, radio, billboards, and other media to friends mentioning “they know someone,” lawyers can be found relatively easily. However, just because a lawyer is around, doesn’t mean he or she is the right representation for you. There are a number of factors to consider when choosing legal representation or advice.

Finding One

A google search or a recommendation from a friend may be the first steps to starting your inquiry, but you shouldn’t stop there. Depending on the nature of your issue, you may be able to seek recommendations or help from organizations you already invest in. According to Investopedia, “some unions offer representation as does the AARP…members of the military are often entitled to certain representation, as are certain individuals covered by umbrella and home insurance policies.”

Due Diligence

Once you have a few names in mind, it can be helpful to look at basic information about some of the law offices you are considering. By looking through their website, you will have a better feel of who they are and the type of legal assistance they can provide. Additionally, some basic information is available on the American Bar Association website that you may want to consider.

Meeting Up

By having a phone conversation or, even better, an in-person meeting, you can learn more about the law offices in question. Most lawyers will offer a free consultation to see if both parties are a good match for one another. By speaking with the lawyer, you can get a sense of their style, warmth, and overall personality. In many cases, you will be offering sensitive and personal information to your legal representation and you want someone you can trust. Also consider how communication will occur while you are being represented by them or their firm, this will be important through the duration of your case.

Measure Experience

Inquire as to their own or their firm’s experience in cases like yours. Their knowledge will help you make the best decisions possible. Additional considerations may come into play with the size of the firm. A smaller firm often has more personal interaction with their clients, whereas a larger firm may be more appropriate for more complicated issues.

Upfront Pricing

During your initial meeting, you should get a strong assessment as to what the legal fees will be. If this information is not clearly communicated, you may want to reconsider. Be sure to ask what is included in that fee and what would constitute billable hours or extra fees going forward.
